The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is a neurological scale used to objectively measure a patient's level of consciousness. Developed in 1974 at the University of Glasgow, it evaluates three parameters: eye opening response (E), verbal response (V), and motor response (M). The total score ranges from 3 (deep coma) to 15 (fully conscious).
Nurses use GCS as part of routine neurological assessments and rapid trauma evaluations. A score of 13–15 indicates mild brain injury, 9–12 moderate, and 3–8 severe. The critical threshold of GCS ≤ 8 signals that the patient cannot protect their airway and intubation should be considered.
GCS scoring is a core competency tested on the NCLEX and used daily in critical care, emergency, and medical-surgical nursing. Mastering GCS helps you rapidly communicate patient status using standardized language that every healthcare provider understands.
LAMP gives nursing students access to GCS, Braden Scale, IV calculators, safe dose checkers, and AI-powered study tools — all in one platform.
