Mental Health Nursing: The Study Guide Your Program Didn't Give You

Mental health nursing is unlike any other nursing course. The answers feel subjective, the content feels abstract, and the NCLEX loves to test it.
Why Psych Nursing Is Hard
In Med-Surg, there's usually a clear "right answer" based on lab values or vital signs. In psych, you're choosing between therapeutic responses that all sound reasonable.
Master Therapeutic Communication
These are your bread-and-butter techniques: - Open-ended questions: "Tell me more about what you're feeling" - Reflection: "It sounds like you're feeling overwhelmed" - Silence: Allowing the patient space to process - Restating: "So what I'm hearing is..." - Focusing: "Let's talk more about the anxiety you mentioned"
Defense Mechanisms You Must Know
- Denial — Refusing to accept reality
- Projection — Attributing your feelings to others
- Rationalization — Logical excuses for irrational behavior
- Displacement — Redirecting emotions to a safer target
- Sublimation — Channeling unacceptable impulses into acceptable activities
- Regression — Reverting to earlier developmental behavior
Crisis Intervention: The Priority Framework
- Ensure safety first — Is the patient a danger to self or others?
- Assess the situation — What precipitated the crisis?
- Provide support — Therapeutic presence and communication
- Connect to resources — Referrals, hotlines, follow-up care
